Participants wanted for CheckmyControl alcohol study

Conducted through Screen Well and the University of Melbourne

Screen Well CheckmyControl Study

In 2023, the University of Melbourne broke ground when it publicised a successful pilot on alcohol consumption and the positive impact of intervention programs. And now, in 2024, in an exciting first, Screen Well is teaming up with researchers from the University’s School of Psychological Sciences to explore the extent and impact of alcohol use in the screen industry!

We are now calling on members of the screen industry to participate.

Called CheckmyControl, this program is essentially the next step in the university’s life-changing research that kicked off in 2023. It will capture data on alcohol use in the entertainment industry and explore unique intervention tactics to help those who need it cut back. This is not a study for those who need serious clinical help, but rather for those who are looking to reduce their alcohol consumption by about a third.

There are a host of reasons why you might want to cut back, alongside proven negative impacts on drinking to excess – including on your mental health, relationships, work and of course your physical health.

A bit about the study

Here’s what we know so far from last year’s successful pilot: According to Dr Antoinette Poulton, a researcher from the University of Melbourne, people who drank above recommended daily limits were able to reduce their intake by up to 35 per cent thanks to some carefully curated intervention.

It goes without saying that Screen Well are incredibly proud to be a part of this study. We especially love the fact that it’s about far more than gathering stats - but about tangibly helping our community through the in-built intervention program that has already been proven to have a positive impact.

As for a bit more information on CheckmyControl, it’s being carried out in three parts and for the next stage – with Screen Well – we are looking to bring in a range of participants in our community. As we mentioned, we’re specifically looking for individuals who don’t require or qualify for medical help, but rather are seeking people who would like to cut back how much alcohol they drink.
